How teachers use a spinning wheel

A wheel does something a list cannot: it builds anticipation. The three seconds while it slows down are the reason children watch, and the reason a wheel holds a class where a plain random pick does not.

That makes it the right tool whenever the choosing is part of the fun — rewards, activities, who goes first — and the wrong one when you just want to move quickly through fifteen questions. For rapid questioning, the name picker is faster.

Options that make it usable in a real lesson

Remove the winner after each spin when you are working through a list — teams presenting, children reading, prizes being handed out — so nobody comes up twice and the wheel visibly empties as you go.

Shuffle rearranges the segments without changing what is on the wheel, which is worth doing occasionally so children stop trying to predict where the pointer lands. And because the entries are encoded into the page address, you can copy the link and get exactly the same wheel back tomorrow, on any device, or send it to the teacher next door.

Reading it from the back of the room

The wheel sizes its segments to how many entries you have and colours them distinctly, so a wheel of four and a wheel of thirty are both readable on a projector. When there are too many entries to fit the labels legibly, the winner is announced in large type underneath — the wheel is the drama, the text is the answer.

If a child in your class finds fast movement uncomfortable, the wheel respects the reduce-motion setting on the device and settles without the spin.
