How teachers use a birthday board
A birthday board on the wall does something a register never can: it makes birthdays visible to the whole class, all year, without you having to remember and announce every single one. Children check it themselves, and a card or a "happy birthday" from a classmate who noticed the board is worth more than one prompted by you.
It also spreads evenly across the year in a way a single "birthdays this month" display does not — a child whose birthday falls in the summer holidays still gets to see their month and day on the wall in September, which matters more to them than it might look like it should.

Why does it only ask for a first name, day and month?
